About the time zone converter

Scheduling across time zones fails because the offset between two cities is not constant. Daylight saving starts on different dates in different countries, and in the southern hemisphere it runs the opposite way, so London to Sydney is nine hours apart for part of the year and eleven for another.

Every time shown here is calculated for the date you enter, using each zone's own rules for that date, so a meeting set months ahead lands where you expect.

Why is the difference between two cities not fixed?

Daylight saving. Countries change clocks on different dates, and some do not change at all, so the gap between two zones shifts several times a year.

What is the safest way to schedule across zones?

Send a calendar invite. It carries the actual instant and each attendee's software converts it, which removes the arithmetic entirely.

Why use UTC on servers?

UTC has no daylight saving, so it never jumps forward or repeats an hour. Store in UTC, convert for display.

Are the offsets correct for past dates?

They use your browser's time zone database, which is accurate for recent history and for the current rules. Very old dates may differ.
