About the word and character counter

Character limits decide whether your work shows up in full or gets cut off. A page title over about 60 characters is truncated in search results, a meta description over 160 is trimmed, and a post over the platform limit simply will not send.

Rather than counting and comparing against a list you have to remember, this shows every limit as a bar that fills as you type, so you see the moment you cross one.

How to use it

  1. 1Paste or type your text.
  2. 2Read the word, character, sentence and paragraph counts.
  3. 3Adjust the reading speed if your audience reads faster or slower than average.
  4. 4Watch the limit bars for the platform you are writing for.
  5. 5Copy the full report if you need to record it.

Questions

How is reading time calculated?

Words divided by your chosen reading speed. The default of 220 words per minute is the usual figure for adult reading of general prose on screen. Technical material is slower.

How are sentences counted?

By full stops, question marks and exclamation marks. Abbreviations with a full stop can inflate the count slightly.

Does it count characters with or without spaces?

Both are shown. Platform limits count spaces, so the limit bars use the figure including them.

Is my text stored?

No. Everything is counted in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
