A sitemap holds at most 50,000 URLs and 50MB uncompressed. Priority and change frequency are hints that Google largely ignores; the list of URLs is the part that matters.

About the xml sitemap generator

A sitemap does not make pages rank. What it does is make sure they get found, which matters most for a new site with few incoming links, or for pages buried several clicks deep in the navigation.

Priority and change frequency are hints that Google has said it largely ignores. The list of URLs and their last modified dates are the parts that do real work.

How to use it

  1. 1Paste your URLs, one per line.
  2. 2Set a last modified date if your pages share one.
  3. 3Choose a change frequency, or leave it out.
  4. 4Copy the XML to sitemap.xml at the root of your site.
  5. 5Add the sitemap line to robots.txt and submit it in Search Console.

Questions

How many URLs can one sitemap hold?

50,000 URLs, or 50MB uncompressed, whichever comes first. Beyond that, split it and reference each file from a sitemap index.

Do priority and change frequency matter?

Very little. Google has stated it ignores them. They are included because some other crawlers still read them, and they do no harm.

Should I include every page?

Only pages you want indexed. Leave out pages that are noindex, redirected, or canonical to somewhere else, since a sitemap listing them sends contradictory signals.

Where does the sitemap go?

At the root, normally /sitemap.xml, with a Sitemap line in robots.txt pointing at it. A sitemap can only cover URLs at or below its own location.
