Instagram limit

30

#webdevelopment#coding#javascript#webdev#love#css-tricks#100#frontenddevelopmenttipsandtricks2026#devtools

Repeated: #coding. A repeat counts against the limit and adds nothing.

A hashtag breaks at the first hyphen, full stop or space, so #css-tricks will not link as written.

Numbers only tags are not clickable on most platforms.

Very generic: #love. These have millions of posts, so yours is buried in seconds.

3 to 5 focused tags outperform a wall of 30.

About the hashtag analyzer

This is a checker rather than a generator. It will not invent hashtags for you; it tells you what is wrong with the ones you have, which is the part that is objective and the part that quietly costs reach.

The failure that catches most people is punctuation. A hashtag ends at the first hyphen, full stop or space, so #css-tricks posts as #css and the rest is plain text. Nothing warns you, and the tag simply does not link.

How to use it

  1. 1Paste your hashtags, separated however you like.
  2. 2Pick the platform to check limits against.
  3. 3Look at the flagged tags and why each one is flagged.
  4. 4Copy the cleaned set.

Questions

Why does my hashtag not link?

Almost always punctuation. A tag breaks at the first hyphen, full stop, or space, so #css-tricks becomes #css. Only letters, numbers and underscores continue a hashtag.

How many hashtags should I use?

Fewer than most people think. Instagram allows 30 but a focused three to five usually performs better, and on X more than one or two measurably reduces engagement.

What makes a hashtag too generic?

Volume. A tag with tens of millions of posts buries yours within seconds of publishing. A smaller specific tag keeps you visible for far longer.

Do duplicate hashtags hurt?

They count against the limit and add nothing, so they cost you a slot. Some platforms also treat obvious repetition as a spam signal.
