Uploading the wrong size means the platform crops or rescales it, and both look worse than getting it right. Uploading larger than needed and letting the platform compress usually produces a softer image than exporting at the target size yourself.
Safe areas matter as much as dimensions. A TikTok video is 1080 by 1920, but the bottom 300 pixels sit under the caption and buttons, so anything important there is hidden.
How to use it
- 1Pick the platform.
- 2Find the placement you are designing for.
- 3Export at exactly those dimensions.
- 4Respect the noted safe areas so nothing important is covered.
Questions
What happens if I upload the wrong size?
The platform crops to fit its own ratio, usually from the centre, or rescales and softens the image. Neither is under your control.
Should I upload larger than the target size?
Slightly larger is fine for high-density screens, but far larger just means the platform's compression does the resizing, which is usually worse than doing it yourself.
What is a safe area?
The region not covered by interface elements. On TikTok and Reels the bottom third holds captions and buttons, so keep text out of it.
